Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru classified vineyard on the Côte d'Or in French Burgundy . It is located in the municipality of Vosne-Romanée , has an area of 9.43 hectares and its own appellation . Only red wine is produced .

Location, climate and soil

The Romanée-Saint-Vivant vineyard is located on a gently sloping eastern slope at an altitude of 250 to 260 m above sea level . In the north it borders on the Premier Cru Lage Les Suchots . To the east, the location adjoins the village center of Vosne. In the south is the Grand Cru location La Grande Rue . In the west, the famous Romanée-Conti and La Romanée as well as Richebourg adjoin its highest point .

Fossil-bearing marl from the Bajocium is exposed in the area of the location . The numerous limestones store the warmth of the day and radiate it back to the vines at night. They also ensure good drainage .

The climate is assigned to the Burgundian transitional climate , in which continental influences predominate over maritime ones. The mostly dry and hot summers allow the Pinot Noir to ripen, but great vintages are only created if there is no rain in autumn to impair the harvest. Due to the pure east location, the microclimate is relatively cool, but particularly sunny. Located just below the cut of the Combe de Concoeur , Romanée-Saint-Vivant is protected from night winds and late frosts.

Wine

Romanée-Saint-Vivant is usually made exclusively from Pinot noir . As more varieties are Pinot Liébault and Pinot Beurot admitted. In theory, up to 15% white grapes ( Chardonnay , Pinot gris and Pinot blanc ) can be used. The natural alcohol content must be at least 11.5  percent by volume. The chaptalization is - as everywhere in Burgundy - allowed. In the case of artificial enrichment with dry sugar, a maximum alcohol content of 14.5 ° is specified. The annual base yield is 35 hectoliters per hectare. This may be exceeded by a maximum of 20%. From 2003 to 2007, an average of 271 hectoliters was produced, i.e. at a low of 30.5 hl / ha. The Grand Cru delivers a good 35,230 bottles per year.

In 2005 the mean age of the vines was 33 years.

The wine is generally considered to be excellent, but is often overshadowed by the other Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanée. In descriptions, wine connoisseurs attribute a particular fullness of taste, complexity and finesse as well as shelf life to red wine.

history

The history of the Grand Cru vineyards of Vosne-Romanée is inextricably linked with the abbeys of Cîteaux and Saint-Vivant in what is now Curtil-Vergy . On November 13, 1131, Hugo II, Duke of Burgundy bequeathed important lands to the monastery of Saint-Vivant in the area of the present-day communes of Flagey-Echézeaux and Vosne-Romanée. The monks planted various vineyards over the years. In 1232 the monastery received the Cloux de Saint-Vivant vineyard as a gift from Alix de Vergy , second wife of Otto III of Burgundy . According to a list from 1512, the Cloux de Saint-Vivant vineyard consisted of the districts Le Cloux des cinq Journaux , Le Cloux des quatre Journaux , Le Cloux des neuf Journaux and le Cloux du Moytant . While the parcel of Le Cloux des cinq Journaux (1,7142 ha) was sold to Daniel Cousin on February 19, 1584 and later became the nucleus of the Romanée-Conti site, the remaining parcel remained in the possession of the monastery. The name Romanée de Saint-Vivant is mentioned in writing for the first time in a lease from 1765.

The monasteries operated viticulture until 1791. The reputation of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant is documented, among other things, by a directory of the Louis XVI wine cellar . The Romanée-Saint-Vivant operates there alongside Chambertin , Clos de Vougeot , La Tâche and Richebourg . In Revolutionary France , the Church's properties were declared national goods and auctioned. Romanée-Saint-Vivant was acquired on January 22, 1791 by the wine merchant Nicolas-Joseph Marey (1760-1818) from Nuits-Saint-Georges . He was married to the daughter of the mathematician and temporary minister Gaspard Monge from Beaune , so this branch of the family was named Marey-Monge . Marey paid 583 livre per ouvrée (one ouvrée = 0.0428 hectares) for the site. The surcharge for an ouvrée was significantly lower than for La Tâche (900 livres) or Chambertin (777 livres) but comparable with the prices of the Clos de Tart (415 livres) or Clos de Vougeot (616 livres).

On December 29, 1898, the Marey-Monge family separated from the parcel of Le Cloux des quatre Journaux and sold it to Louis Latour and Charles Noëllat.

In 1966, 5.28 hectares of vineyards were leased to the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti . After the death of Geneviève Marey-Monge, the Neyrand family inherited this vineyard and sold it to the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1988 for an estimated 60 million French francs . This winery now owns over half of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant site. The Domaine Leroy acquired 0.99 hectares of the vineyard in 1988. Other renowned owners are the domains Arnoux-Lachaux, de L'Arlot, S. Cathiard, JJ Confuron, Dujac, Hudelot-Noellat and Maison Louis Latour.

The Romanée-Saint-Vivant site received the status of a Grand Cru on September 11, 1936. The decree on the Contrôlée appellation also covers the neighboring Grands Cru sites La Tâche , Richebourg , Romanée-Conti and La Romanée .
