The Juist Foundation was founded on January 14th, 2006 as the 99th community  foundation in Germany on the East Frisian island of Juist . The foundation bodies are the foundation council and the foundation board . Once a year, a donors forum (meeting of all donors) takes place on Juist; every five years a donor's meal in the island church .

The foundation is a member of "Bürgerstiftungen Deutschlands" (former Community Foundation Initiative (IBS); funded by the Federal Association of German Foundations ) and has so far regularly received their seal of approval . It is recognized as non-profit and describes itself as politically and denominationally independent.

The name Juist Foundation was chosen deliberately, because it is not just about a commitment by and for Juist citizens, but also guests and island friends should be included in the work. Above all, Juister associations and institutions are funded.

According to the statutes, the purpose of the foundation is to promote

  • education and parenting
  • Youth and elderly care
  • Culture, art and monument preservation
  • Science and Research
  • Environment, nature protection and landscape management
  • Home care
  • Health and sport

as well as charitable and religious purposes on the island of Juist. There are no compulsory tasks of the community.

As the foundation's first action in 2007, the goldfish ponds on Juist that Otto Leege had set up were returned to their original state. In the following years, various purchases were made possible: among other things, a mobile game, technology for the theater, volleyball nets and two boules courts.

In 2011, the foundation purchased two defibrillators , which were installed at the east and west ends of the island in weatherproof housings and accessible at all times. With their support, a one-week project at the Inselschule Juist and the establishment of Europe's first guest orchestra with 40 participating holiday guests came about. While the guest orchestra had to be canceled in 2013 due to a lack of participation, the school project week was repeated.

Memmert fire

In 2012, the foundation was the first community foundation to publish its own smartphone app for the iPhone . An Android version followed in spring 2014 .

The 5th Island Music Festival took place at the end of September 2013. It was designed exclusively with contributions from Juister music groups from various directions. Furthermore, a multi-generation exercise course with six sports equipment was set up in 2013 and the lighthouse of the Memmertfeuer lighthouse was renovated in 2013/2014 .

The assets are now (2018) around 680,000 euros. In the "Report Community Foundations" of the Active Citizenship Foundation , the Juist Foundation was in first place in 2014 in terms of project funding and donation income (per capita values for residents in the foundation area)
