Leopold Ritter von Hauffe (born April 8, 1840 in Judenburg , † November 1, 1912 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology and the German University of Technology Brno .

Life

Leopold Hauffe studied at what was then the Joanneum in Graz and at the ETH Zurich , where he also completed his habilitation in 1866. First he worked as an assistant at the Joanneum, from 1865 as a designer and from 1866 as a private lecturer in mechanical engineering in Zurich.

From 1867 to 1873 he was a full professor of mechanical engineering at the German Technical University in Brno, where he was elected rector in 1870. From 1873 until his retirement in 1903 he was a full professor of mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. In the academic years 1877/78 to 1880/81 and 1885/86 to 1891/92 he was dean of the mechanical engineering school. In the academic year 1881/82 he was elected rector of the technical university . During his rectorate, a one-year cultural-technical course was introduced as part of the engineering school.

In 1887 he was knighted and in 1888 appointed councilor . In 1899 he was appointed to the Austrian Imperial Council as a member of the manor house .

Hauffe died in 1912 at the age of 72 and was buried at the Hietzing cemetery. In his scientific work he dealt with the construction and development of power machines and hoists .
