Erich Bukovics

Erich Bukovics (born August 25, 1921 in Vienna ; † January 8, 1975 there ) was an Austrian mathematician and university professor . From 1970 to 1972 he was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Erich Bukovics studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna from 1939 . After war-related interruption he received his doctorate in 1948 at Nicholas Hofreiter to Dr. phil. and passed the teaching examination in the same year. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Vienna, from November 1949 to 1959 he was assistant at the III. Institute for Mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology. In 1954 he completed his habilitation and became a lecturer, in 1959 he was appointed full professor and head of the I. Institute for Mathematics at the Technical University.

In the academic year 1967/68 he was dean of the technical and natural science faculty, from 1970/71 to 1971/72 he was rector of the technical university . Bukovics was involved in setting up the mathematics laboratory at the technical university, as well as in the establishment of new courses of study for computer science and technical mathematics and the implementation of electronic data processing in the administration of the university. During his term of office, a separate IT department was created in the rectorate.

Erich Bukovics was married to the mathematician Brigitte Radon (* 1924), his father-in-law was the mathematician Johann Radon . Bukovics died in the Rudolfinerhaus at the age of 53 and is buried at the Döblinger Friedhof (group MO, number 48).
