Josef Leopold Krames (born October 7, 1897 in Vienna , † August 30, 1986 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian mathematician .

Life

Krames graduated from the Vienna-Währing high school in 1915 and began teaching mathematics and descriptive geometry in the autumn of the same year. In 1917 he passed the first state examination and began attending mathematical, philosophical and pedagogical lectures at the University of Vienna .

In 1920 he did his doctorate at the Technical University of Vienna under Emil Müller on the subject of the rule surface of the third order, whose strict line is an ellipse . In the spring of 1924 he completed his habilitation for projective geometry there. After Müller's death, he initially represented him. After Erwin Kruppa was appointed as Müller's successor , he accepted a position at the German Technical University in Brno in 1929 .

In 1932 Krames became a full professor for descriptive geometry at the Technical University of Graz , where he was also vice rector in 1938/39. From 1938 he took over the second chair for descriptive geometry at the Vienna University of Technology and was dismissed in 1945 due to the denazification laws. After working at the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying , he took over the first chair for descriptive geometry at the Vienna University of Technology in 1957, where he was also rector in the 1961/62 academic year. In 1969 he retired.

Josef Krames made important contributions to geometry in 110 papers.
