The Austrian Mathematical Society ( ÖMG ) is the professional representation of mathematicians in Austria . It is a scientific association ( ZVR number 713660073) for the promotion of teaching, research and application of mathematics in Austria. The chairman of the ÖMG is Michael Oberguggenberger .

history

The society was founded in 1903 by the university professors Ludwig Boltzmann , Gustav von Escherich and Emil Müller under the name Mathematische Gesellschaft in Vienna .

After the Second World War , the company resumed its activities in May 1946. On August 10, 1946, it was formally re-established by Rudolf Inzinger . In order to document its claim to the nationwide representation of the interests of mathematicians, it was renamed the Austrian Mathematical Society in autumn 1948 .

activity

Every four years the ÖMG organizes a mathematicians congress at one of the eleven Austrian universities with international participation. Usually, in the years in which the Austrian Mathematicians Congress is held, the German Mathematicians Association also holds its annual meeting within the framework of this congress.

Also every four years, but alternating with the Austrian mathematicians 'congresses, a mathematicians' meeting or a neighborhood conference is held in cooperation with a neighboring country.

As part of each of these congresses and meetings, a didactics day for the special interests of teachers in secondary schools and a technical college day are held. In addition, didactic advanced training events are organized every year with the support of the ÖMG.

The ÖMG is a member of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) , the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM).

Prices

The most important prize of the ÖMG every year is the promotion award of the Austrian Mathematical Society to a younger member who has particularly qualified through his research. In addition, the ÖMG annually awards two study prizes (one each for the best diploma thesis and the best dissertation ) and student prizes for outstanding specialist work at Austrian schools in mathematics or descriptive geometry .

Publications

The association magazine Internationale Mathematische Nachrichten of the Austrian Mathematical Society appears three times a year. It was founded in June 1947 by Rudolf Inzinger as the news of the Mathematical Society in Vienna and published for the first time in June 1947. The magazine has been published under the current title since 1952. Until 1971 it was the official publication organ of the International Mathematical Union . From 1953 to 1977 she was the editor of Walter Wunderlich , who had been editor of the news ever since it was founded.
