Emil Artmann

Emil Wilhelm Artmann (born July 26, 1871 in Rodaun near Vienna ; † November 4, 1939 in Vienna) was an Austrian civil engineer , architect and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Emil Artmann first attended the state high school in Währing , where he graduated from high school in 1890 . He then studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vienna University of Technology with Max von Ferstel , Karl Mayreder and Karl König, among others . He completed his studies in 1897 with a diploma.

From 1897 to 1907 he worked as a senior engineer in the building construction department of the Imperial and Royal Ministry of the Interior . In this function he was responsible for the establishment of the Imperial and Royal High School in Vienna-Hietzing (Fichtnergasse 15) from 1899/1900 and from 1901 to 1905 for the establishment of the palace of the Imperial and Royal Lieutenancy in Trieste .

From 1906 he was a full professor of building construction, from 1909 for architecture and civil engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. This year he received his doctorate with a thesis on the foundation in Hochbaue at the Technical University of Vienna to Dr. techn. In the academic years 1912/13 and 1913/14 he was dean of the building school, in 1917/18 and 1919/20 of the civil engineering school. In 1918 he introduced advanced training courses for engineers working in practice. In the academic year 1920/21 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Emil Artmann took part in a number of competitions, including a competition for the Vienna Central Cemetery in 1899 and for an extension to the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in 1910 . In the competition for the construction of the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Jubilee Church on the then Erzherzog-Karl-Platz (today Mexikoplatz ) in Vienna-Leopoldstadt in 1898, his design was ranked second.

Artmann was a member of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects from 1897 , of the Cooperative of Visual Artists Vienna ( Künstlerhaus ) and the Viennese Bauhütte from 1907 and of the Central Association of Architects in Austria from 1908 . In 1921 he was appointed councilor .

Emil Artmann died in 1939 at the age of 68. His father was the officer and military technician Ferdinand Artmann (1830–1883), his brother the painter Hans Artmann (1868–1902) and his nephew the architect Paul Artmann (1909–2006).
