Franz Magyar (born May 6, 1894 in Vienna ; † September 4, 1958 there ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Franz Magyar studied mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology from 1912. After the outbreak of the First World War he was drafted into the infantry, from 1916 he was an aviator with the kuk aviation troops . As part of his work in the airship yard at the Vienna Arsenal , he was also involved in the development of parachute systems. After the war he finished his studies in 1919 with the second state examination.

From 1920 he worked as an assistant to Artur Budau (1856-1923) at the chair for hydropower machines and pumps , where he stayed until 1931. Among other things, he worked there on the textbook for hydraulics published by Budau in 1920/21 and the lectures on pump construction. From 1921 he also taught at the Federal College for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Vienna. In 1923 he received his doctorate at the Technical University of Vienna with a dissertation on the subject of acceleration and shock wave problems in hydraulic rams and supplemented the subjects of hydraulics , water power machines and pumps at the university . In 1927 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the theory of vibrations in air tanks for piston pumps . Together with Artur Budau's successor, Eugen Feifel (1880–1965), he dealt with currents in cyclones.

In 1937 he was appointed associate professor at the university, but after the "Anschluss" of Austria, he was relieved of his functions. During the war he worked in industry, after the end of the war he returned to the university in 1945 as a full professor of fluid dynamics . In the following years he rebuilt the aerodynamic laboratory, which had been damaged by the war, and continued to deal with the flow in cyclones as well as with vortex sink currents and he developed a swirl nozzle for the atomization of liquids. In the academic years 1946/57 to 1949/50 he was dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in the academic year 1957/58 he was elected rector of the technical university .

Magyar was editor of the Austrian Engineering Archive for many years , and in 1958 he became a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . He died shortly before the end of his rectorate at the age of 64.
