Walter Kemmerling

Walter Kemmerling (born June 28, 1921 in Essen , † September 22, 1989 in Celle ) was a German hydraulic engineering technician and university professor . From 1983 to 1987 he was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Walter Kemmerling studied civil engineering from 1940 and interrupted by war and captivity from 1945 to 1949 at the Technical University of Hanover with a focus on hydraulic engineering. In 1957 he received his doctorate in technology. From 1949 to 1955 he worked as an assistant at the Technical University of Hanover in the field of urban water management and agricultural hydraulic engineering, from 1955 to 1973 he carried out scientific activities as an employee of the Lower Saxony state government in Hildesheim and Celle, among others.

In 1968 he was given a teaching position at the University of Göttingen , in 1969 a visiting professorship at the Technical University of Vienna , where he was appointed full professor for water regulation and agricultural hydraulic engineering in 1970. In the academic years 1979/80 to 1981/82 he was dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, from 1983/84 to 1986/87 rector of the Technical University of Vienna . During his tenure, the Freihaus building complex could be partially occupied. In 1984 his wife Gisela founded the Vienna University of Technology orchestra .

From 1985 to 1987 Kemmerling was chairman of the Austrian Rectors' Conference and thus the first rector of the Vienna University of Technology to hold this office.

He was a member of the Catholic student associations AV Frisia Hannover (since 1946), KÖHV Alpenland Vienna (since 1982) and KÖHV Nordgau Vienna (since 1982).
