Christoph Badelt

Christoph Badelt (born February 26, 1951 in Vienna ) is an Austrian economist and was Rector of the Vienna University of Economics and Business from March 2002 to September 2015 . On September 1, 2016, he took over the management of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research .

education

Badelt graduated in 1969 at the grammar school and studied Wien 18 1970-1974 Economics at the former World Trade University , which he in July 1974 with the graduation rer. Mag. soc. oec. completed. In July 1976 his doctorate he for Doctor of Social and Economic Sciences .

Academic career

From 1974 Christoph Badelt worked as an assistant at the Institute for Economics at WU. Between 1981 and 1985 he was then intermittently visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In the meantime, he completed his habilitation at WU in 1984 . From July 1986 he was again employed as a senior assistant or university lecturer at WU. From 1985 to 1989 he was also a visiting professor and lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt . Between 1986 and 1995 Badelt received several professorships at universities in Germany. From 1989 to 1997 he was an associate professor for economic and social policy at WU, and in 1997 he was appointed full professor. Before he was appointed rector of the university, he also held several managerial positions at WU. From 1991 to 1995 he was a member of the Rector's Board, 1998 to 2002 Vice Rector for Infrastructure at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, and from 1993 to 2002 scientific director of the interdisciplinary university course for social economy, management and organization of social services (ISMOS course).

In addition, Badelt is (co-) author of 17 books and author of more than a hundred scientific articles in anthologies and journals. In his work he primarily deals with the current problems and conflicts in the welfare state and the possible solutions.

From 2005 to the end of 2009, Christoph Badelt was chairman of the Austrian University Conference . He was followed in January 2010 by Hans Sünkel from Graz University of Technology .

As of October 1, 2015, Badelt, who was no longer running for rector, was replaced by Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger as rector of the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

On September 1, 2016, he succeeded Karl Aiginger as head of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO).

Others

Badelt has three children with his wife Irmgard. A passionate runner and cyclist, he was named Scientist of the Year 1999 by the Club of Education and Science Journalists for his ability to communicate his research results to a wide audience. He has been a member of the ERSTE Foundation's Board of Trustees since 2005 .
