Karl Aiginger (born October 23, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian economic researcher . From 2005 to 2016 he was head of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) , he is visiting professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and honorary professor at the University of Linz . Since 2016 he has been a member of the discussion forum "Querdenkerplattform: Vienna - Europe".

Life

He studied at the University of Vienna (1966–1974) and at Purdue University (Indiana, USA, 1978). He worked at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) between 1970 and 2016. Karl Aiginger is Professor of Economic Policy at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the University of Linz . He was visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 1991) and at the University of California, Los Angeles (USA, 1997). He taught as a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (California, USA, 2002) and gave lectures at Changsha University (Hunan, China).

In September 2016, Christoph Badelt replaced Karl Aiginger as head of WIFO.

He is married and has two children.

Since 1966 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KaV Norica Wien in the ÖCV .

Work

Karl Aiginger's specialty is industrial economics, he also deals with the analysis of industrial policy, innovation, competitiveness of companies, international competition and the European economic and social model. He is the founder and editor of the Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade (with Marcel Canoy) and was project leader of the competition reports of the European Commission Directorate Entrepreneurship and Industry. He evaluated the Finnish innovation system on behalf of the Government of Finland and conducted the evaluation system of the Austrian research promotion and financing on behalf of the Austrian government . He was a member of the supervisory board of the holding company of the Austrian nationalized companies (cf. nationalization in Austria ).

His work includes theoretical treatises on corporate decisions under uncertainty and treatises on policy-related assessments of the competitiveness of nations (for the European Commission and the OECD ). He wrote articles for the Advisory Council for Economic and Social Issues and the reform dialogue of the Austrian federal government. In recent years he has increasingly dealt with the causes and consequences of the financial crisis and economic-political strategies.

Between 2012 and 2016 he headed the research project "WWWforEurope - A New Growth Path for Europe". This was the largest socio-economic project in the 7th Research Framework Program of the EU . It was funded by the EU and coordinated by WIFO . It is a key scientific project accompanying the Europe 2020 strategy and is intended to provide the basis for a more dynamic, ecological and social society. The final report and the executive summary were presented in Brussels in February 2016. The European Parliament , the European Commission and the international media were the target groups for the final conference, in which Kenneth Arrow from Stanford University gave the opening speech.
