Heinrich Schmidinger (born February 15, 1954 in Vienna ) is an Austrian philosopher and Roman Catholic theologian and university professor . Schmidinger was Rector of the University of Salzburg from 2001 to September 2019 .

Life

His father was the historian Heinrich Schmidinger , who taught as a university professor in Switzerland . Schmidinger spent his childhood in Switzerland. He studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and completed his habilitation in 1984 at the theological faculty of the University of Innsbruck in Christian philosophy .

Since 1993 Schmidinger Professor at the Department of Philosophy at the Catholic Theological Faculty is the University of Salzburg , whose dean , he was elected 1995th In 1999 Schmidinger became Vice Rector for Resources and Deputy to University Rector Adolf Haslinger . He was appointed his successor in 2001.

From 2011 to 2015, Rector Schmidinger was also chairman of the Austrian University Conference , and in December 2015 Sonja Hammerschmid was elected as his successor in this function.

He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2017 he received a Cardinal Innitzer Prize .

In 2011 Schmidinger signed the memorandum Church 2011: A necessary departure . The eyelash animal Schmidingerella arcuata has been named after him since 2012 .

On February 21, 2019 Hendrik Lehnert from the University Council elected rector of the University of Salzburg. He succeeded Schmidinger in this role on October 1, 2019.

Schmidinger is married and has three children.
