Joachim Dalfen

Joachim Dalfen (born November 4, 1936 in Hindenburg (Upper Silesia) ; † March 4, 2017 in Puch near Hallein ) was an Austrian classical philologist of German origin.

Joachim Dalfen and his family came to Munich as a refugee in 1946 and attended the Theresien-Gymnasium until 1953 . He received his doctorate in 1966 in Munich with the dissertation Research into the History of Forms on the Self- Contemplations of Marcus Aurelius and was then employed as a lecturer for Greek and Latin style exercises. In 1971 he achieved his habilitation as a university lecturer in Salzburg with the font Polis and Poiesis: The Confrontation with Poetry in Plato and his contemporaries . In 1972 Dalfen was appointed full professor with a focus on Greek studies. From 1981 to 1983 Dalfen was dean of the humanities faculty, from 1985 to 1987 rector of the university. From 1987 he was co-editor of the Graz contributions . In the summer semester of 2005, Dalfen retired. He gave his farewell lecture on the subject of 'Don't hope in Plato's state. Encounters between a philologist and Emperor Marc Aurel ' . His successor was Thomas Schirren in the 2007 summer semester . Dalfen was a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . There he headed the Commission for Ancient Literature and Latin Tradition. He was also a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

His main focus was on Plato and Marc Aurel research. His text edition by Marcus Aurelius on Ad se ipsum libri XII, published in 1972 in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana, is the authoritative text edition to this day. He has also dealt with ancient European literature and culture in numerous publications, especially Greek tragedy and philosophy, but also on Latin authors such as Cicero and Caesar .
