Georg Pfligersdorffer (born June 12, 1916 in Wiener Neustadt ; † January 22, 2005 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

Pfligersdorffer worked on the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich from 1950 to 1958 . In 1956 he completed his habilitation in Classical Philology at the University of Munich . In 1958 he received a paid lectureship and in 1960 he was appointed associate professor. In 1965 he was offered the chair of Classical Philology in Salzburg, where he had already been a visiting professor the year before. There he also directed the fortunes of his faculty for many years as vice dean and later as dean. Since 1977 he has also been President of the International Research Center for Fundamental Science in Salzburg. He always tried to integrate the university into the cultural life of the city of Salzburg in the sense of an old town university.

His main research interests were the imperial and early Christian Latin literature as well as ancient philosophy. He devoted a large part of his studies to working on Augustine's writings . Another, not insignificant, facet of Georg Pfligersdorffer's work is represented by the writings that 19th century researchers such as Anton Prokesch von Osten or Alexander v. Warsberg are dedicated. The Bohemian Forest and the Mühlviertel, home of the poet, painter and cultural official Adalbert Stifter, whom he valued so much, was the subject of his studies, which were associated with many hikes and which reflected his particular fondness for geography, as well as historical geography in his Courses and numerous excursions to Greece with the students and friends of the institute always came into their own, also in cooperation with the Geographical Institute of the University of Salzburg. Finally, reference should be made to a publication that was unfortunately not given enough consideration by the specialist scientific community in the course of the research on Troy, although it was published in 1985 in the Academy's publications of the University of Göttingen.

Pfligersdorffer, who was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen in 1980, was awarded the Silver Medal of the State of Salzburg in 1981 and finally the Golden Medal of Honor in 1986 for his services to science . In 1987 he was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class and in 1996 the Greek Order of the Phoenix of Commander's Rank.

Since 1973 he has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KÖHV Rheno-Juvavia Salzburg in the ÖCV .
