Life

He studied classical philology at the University of Vienna and for a year in Leipzig and received his doctorate on the Testimonia Aristophanea in the spring of 1927 in Vienna, where Ludwig Radermacher was primarily his teacher. In 1928 he passed the teaching examination and has been employed in the school service ever since. In 1938 he was dismissed from school because he was "on his father's side of Jewish origin", he could no longer submit his completed habilitation thesis, and he was no longer allowed to enter the university. Friends helped him to a modest livelihood, so he wrote the article Ovid for the Realencyclopedia around this time . In 1945 he returned to school and received his habilitation at the University of Vienna, where he has been teaching since the winter semester 1945/46. In 1951 he became an associate professor, succeeding Karl Mras , and a full professor from 1955 until his retirement in 1973. 1968/1969 he was rector of the University of Vienna . Kraus was buried at the Ober Sankt Veiter cemetery .
