Life

After passing his school leaving examination in 1909 and completing military service, Hans Oellacher studied classical philology, ancient history and archeology at the University of Vienna from 1910 , where he was particularly influenced by Hans von Arnim . In the fall of 1914 he was drafted into the First World War. During a vacation in 1916, he reached in Vienna his promotion to Dr. phil. After his return from the war, he passed the teaching examination in the subjects of Greek, Latin and German in the summer of 1919. He got his first job in autumn 1919 at the federal high school in Salzburg, where he was appointed a real high school teacher in 1921.

In addition to his work at the grammar school, Oellacher continued his research work. In the winter of 1929/1930 he took a vacation to study the papyri in the Archduke Rainer Collection. With an excerpt of his work he qualified as a professor at the University of Innsbruck in 1936 . After the habilitation colloquium with Albin Lesky , Oellacher received the venia legendi for classical philology in the summer of 1937. In the winter semester of 1937/1938 he gave his first lecture, which was also his last at the university: after Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938 , he was dismissed from school and from the university. From 1940 to 1945 Oellacher worked as a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich.

After the end of the war, Oellacher worked again at the Federal High School in Salzburg and held Greek language courses as a lecturer at the University of Salzburg. In 1947 he moved to the University of Vienna as an associate professor , where he was appointed full professor in May 1948. On May 15, 1949, a few days before his 60th birthday, he died unexpectedly.

In 1954 the Oellacherweg in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
