Luis Puig Esteve (born April 11, 1915 in Alcúdia ; † July 31, 1990 in Valencia ) was President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) from 1981 to 1990 .

Luis Puig was very athletic from a young age; he practiced hockey , baseball and swimming . In hockey he played in the national selection. He took up a medical degree, which he could not finish because of the Spanish Civil War . He later taught sports at the University of Valencia and was a functionary in various Spanish sports associations ( athletics , football and basketball ). At the age of 25, he also began working as a cycling coach in the Valencia region; from 1961 to 1963 he was the Spanish national coach. In 1968 he became President of the Valencia Cycling Federation. He also worked as a journalist for Levante magazine , where he was responsible for the cycling pages.

In 1981 Luis Puig was elected President of the UCI; he held this office until his death in 1990. The Trofeo Luis Puig cycling race was named after him, as was the Palacio Velódromo Luis Puig (in Valencian : Palau Velódromo Luis Puig ), inaugurated in 1992 , in which the UCI Track World Championships and, for example, the European Athletics Indoor Championships 1998 and athletics Indoor World Championships 2008 took place.

Luis Puig died of a stroke at the age of 75.
