Trofeo Luis Puig

The Trofeo Luis Puig was a Spanish cycling race . The one-day race took place every February from 1981 to 2005 in the Autonomous Community of Valencia . The race is named after Luis Puig , a former president of the International Cycling Federation .

The race always ended in the city of Valencia . The starting point, however, varied. Until 1989 he was in small towns in the province such as Algemesm , Benifays , Burjassot , Torrent , Elda , Dénia and Cullera , or Benidorm . Since then, the start has been either in Benidorm or Valencia. In 2005, when the UCI Europe Tour was introduced , the race was part of this racing series and was classified in category 1.1. An event was planned for 2006. However, due to the high cost of the race and the lack of cooperation from the Benidorm city council, the race was canceled and has not taken place since. Record winners are the German Erik Zabel and the Belgian Noël Dejonckheere with three wins each. In addition, two other Germans, Andreas Kappes and Reimund Dietzen, won the race.

The predecessor race of Trofeo Luis Puig was the one-day race Gran Premio de Valencia from 1969 to 1979 . It always began and ended in Valencia and was replaced after a one-year break in 1980 by the Trofeo Luis Puig.
