Eric Leman (born July 17, 1946 in Ledegem ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

Eric Leman embodied the typical Belgian specialist for one-day races . As an amateur, he won a total of 25 victories in the 1967 season. He was seen as a sprint and strong-willed. These qualities contributed to the fact that he was able to beat Eddy Merckx and Walter Godefroot in his first win of a total of three (1972 and 1973) at the Tour of Flanders in 1970 . With Achiel Buysse , Fiorenzo Magni , Johan Museeuw and Tom Boonen, Leman is one of the record holders in this race, who won the race three times.

Leman achieved a total of 39 victories during his professional career. He took part in the Tour de France five times between 1968 and 1974 . He was able to win five stages. He also won several stages at Paris – Nice , the Spain and the Andalusia tour . In 1968 he also won the Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne race , the Briek Schotte Grand Prix in 1970 and the Gran Premio de Valencia in 1972 .

In 1971 his wife was killed in a car accident while traveling to the Amstel Gold Race , a few weeks after his teammate Jean-Pierre Monseré was hit by a car during a race and died.
