Michel Pollentier (born February 13, 1951 in Diksmuide , West Flanders) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Career

After Pollentier took third place as an amateur at the GDR tour in 1971 and won the Belgian championship in the team time trial in 1972 , he became a professional with the Belgian cycling team Flandria in 1973 .

In 1976 Pollentier won the Tour of Belgium . His greatest career success was winning the Giro d'Italia in 1977 with a 2:32 minute lead over Francesco Moser . In the same year he was able to win the Tour de Suisse with a lead of 58 seconds over Lucien van Impe and became Belgian champion. He was able to successfully defend this championship title in 1978 after having previously won the Dauphiné Libéré stage race .

At the Tour de France 1978 he took over the yellow jersey of the overall leader after reaching the mountain in L'Alpe d'Huez . His attempt to manipulate the subsequent doping test with the help of a urine bag hidden under his armpit failed. He was then disqualified.

His only classic win came in 1980 on the Tour of Flanders .

After the 1984 season he ended his professional career in which he had won 88 wins.
