Roberto Poggiali

Roberto Poggiali (born April 16, 1941 in Florence ) is a former Italian cyclist and national champion in cycling .

In 1962 Roberto Poggiali became Italian champion in the amateur road race . He drove for Italy in the Tour de l'Avenir in 1962, which he finished in 19th place . The following year he moved to the professionals . His greatest successes were victories at the Tour de Suisse in 1970 with a lead of 1:03 minutes over Louis Pfenninger and at the Flèche Wallone (1965). In the "Flèche" he beat Felice Gimondi , Tom Simpson and Eddy Merckx , who made his professional debut in this race. He also won smaller races such as the Coppa Sabatini (1971), the Giro del Lazio (1974), the Giro del Friuli (1975) and the Giro dell'Umbria (1976).

Between 1963 and 1978 Poggiali took part in the Giro d'Italia 15 times . His best placement was eighth in 1965 . He started three times without outstanding success in the Tour de France , and once each in the Vuelta a España (1968) and the Tour of Belgium . After the Tour of Italy in 1978 he resigned from cycling.

Roberto Poggialis best friend was the Danish racing driver Ole Ritter , whom he is said to have "represented" once at the Critérium van Cléguerec in the Morbihan department as a favor , as Ritter felt too exhausted that day.
