Levi Leipheimer (born October 24, 1973 in Butte , Montana ) is a former American cyclist .

Athletic career

Leipheimer, whose ancestors came from the former imperial-ulmish country town of Leipheim , the neighboring town of Günzburg , in Bavarian Swabia , began cycling in 1987 and became a professional in 1997. In 1998 and 1999 he rode in the Saturn Cycling Team and was one of Lance Armstrong's noblemen in 2000 and 2001 with the US Postal Service team . From 2002 to 2004 he rode for the Dutch cycling team Rabobank . From 2005 Levi Leipheimer wore the jersey of Team Gerolsteiner , but switched to the American Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team for the 2007 season .

Leipheimer was already suspected in 2006 of working with the Italian sports medicine specialist Michele Ferrari . He was noticed at the Tour de France 2005 with abnormal blood values, so that the world association UCI wanted to urge his team boss Holczer to take Leipheimer out of the race. Leipheimer finally finished sixth in the overall ranking, which was subsequently revised to fifth after Jan Ullrich's conviction in 2012.

Leipheimer's team Astana was not invited to the Tour de France 2008 , which is why he was unable to participate. In the time trial at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , he won the bronze medal.

In 2009 Leipheimer had to cancel the Tour de France prematurely due to a broken wrist.

On October 10, 2012, Leipheimer was banned from the USADA for doping . As part of the doping process against Lance Armstrong and numerous other drivers of the US Postal Team, he had confessed as a key witness to have participated in systematic doping. He accepted a six-month ban from September 1, 2012 to March 1, 2013 and the cancellation of his results from June 1, 1999 to July 30, 2006 and July 7 to July 29, 2007 (including 3rd place in the Tour de France 2007 ). His Omega Pharma-Quickstep team acknowledged Leipheimer's collaboration with the USADA in a press release, but terminated the contract with him in view of the doping confession. Since he could not find a new team after his doping ban, he ended his active career as a professional cyclist.

Private

Levi Leipheimer is married and a committed animal rights activist. Together with his wife Odessa Gunn , a former professional cyclist, he founded Freedom Hill in 2004 , an organization that looks after abandoned animals. Leipheimer also supports the animal rights organization PETA .

During his active time he lived alternately in Santa Rosa ( California ) and Girona , Spain. In October 2017, his Santa Rosa home burned to the ground during widespread California wildfires.
