Ron Kiefel

Ronald Alexander "Ron" Kiefel (born April 11, 1960 in Wheat Ridge ) is a former American cyclist .

In 1978, Ron Kiefel finished third in the Junior Road World Championships in team time trial , with Greg LeMond , Greg Demgen and Jeff Bradley . In 1983 he was three-time American champion in the amateur road race , in the individual and team time trial. In 1983 he also started at the UCI Road World Championships and was classified 34th in the amateur road race. The following year he started at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , won the bronze medal in the team time trial (with Roy Knickman , Davis Phinney and Andy Weaver ) and finished ninth in the individual road race.

In 1985, Kiefel joined the pros and drove for various teams in the years that followed, including 7-Eleven and Motorola . Ron Kiefel started seven times in the Tour de France , but without placing himself at the front; he also drove other European tours. In 1985 he won the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia and in the same year the Trofeo Laigueglia and in 1988 the Giro di Toscana . In 1988 he became the American road racing champion for professionals.

In 1996, Kiefel retired from active cycling. He and his wife hosted a weekly radio program for a while, and commented on European tours and classics on television and radio . He works as a coach in his home town of Wheat Ridge, runs a bike shop, is president of the local cycling club and organizes cycling races. In 2004, Ron Kiefel was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame .
