Davis Welsh Phinney (born July 10, 1959 in Boulder , Colorado ) is a retired American cyclist and national cycling champion . He is the first American to win a stage in the Tour de France .

Cycling career

1980 Davis Phinney was third in the US championship in cyclo-cross racing . In 1982 and 1983 he was able to win the national title in the team time trial. In this discipline he was also Pan American champion in 1983. In 1984 he started at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In the team time trial he won the bronze medal with Roy Knickman , Ron Kiefel and Andy Weaver , in the individual road race he finished fifth. Phinney turned pro right after the August games and had ten wins by the end of the season. He started four times in the Tour de France and won one stage each in 1986 and 1987 . In 1986 he won the Redlands Bicycle Classics . In 1991 he became the American road racing champion for professionals. In 1988 he won the “Tour of the Americas” and twice, in 1991 and 1993, the “ Fitchburg Longsjo Classic ” race. In the fall of 1993, he retired as a professional driver after winning nine races in his last season.

Professional and family

After retiring from active cycling that year, Davis Phinney worked as a journalist and sports commentator. He is married to former cyclist Connie Carpenter-Phinney and has two children. The son Taylor Phinney is also a successful cyclist.

illness

At the age of 40, Phinney was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease . In 2004 he founded the Davis Phinney Foundation to support people with Parkinson's disease.

Honors

In 2001, Davis Phinney was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame .
