Matthew Busche (born May 9, 1985 in Wauwatosa ) is a former American cyclist . He is a two-time national road racing champion (2011, 2015).

Athletic career

Matthew Busche grew up in his birthplace in Wisconsin . During his college days he became a two-time student champion in cross country . In 2005 he started cycling for training purposes after an injury. In 2008, Busche switched entirely to competitive cycling. Already in 2009 he drove as a stagiaire for the Professional Continental Team Kelly Benefits Strategies and finished fifth in the US road championship.

In 2010 he switched to the UCI ProTeam RadioShack , was third in the overall ranking of the Tour of Denmark, fifth in the individual time trial and seventh in the road race of the national championship. In 2011, Matthew Busche became the American road racing champion and finished third in the individual time trial. He contested his first Grand Tour with the Vuelta a España in 2011 and finished the race in 113th place. In the 2013 and 2014 events , he was 64th and 98th respectively.

In 2015 Busche was again national road champion, but also suffered two falls with injuries, in spring on Mallorca and after the championship at the Tour of Utah . These falls, he said, “claimed victims” mentally and physically. After unsuccessfully attempting a contract with a new team in 2016, the 31-year-old announced his retirement from competitive cycling in December.
