Trek-Segafredo is an American cycling team that started its first season in the UCI WorldTour in 2011 under the name Leopard Trek with a Luxembourg license . The team is based in Deinze, Belgium .

history

founding

The team, initially only known as the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project , was officially presented on January 6, 2011 after six months of development. The world association Union Cycliste Internationale immediately classified the team as the strongest road cycling team in the world and awarded a license as a UCI ProTeam with a Luxembourg license.

It was named after the newly founded operating company Leopard SA of the Luxembourg sports patron and real estate broker Flavio Becca , who u. a. has already supported the national first division soccer team F91 Dudelange . The US company Trek , which it claims to be the world's largest manufacturer of bicycles , acted as co-name sponsor . Other important sponsors in 2011 were the German automobile manufacturer and vehicle sponsor of the Mercedes-Benz team , the Luxembourg energy supply company Enovos and the Scandinavian clothing manufacturer and team supplier Craft .

The team's manager was the Dane Brian Nygaard , who was formerly the spokesman for the Bjarne-Riis-Team Saxo-Bank and from there not only recruited most of the drivers, but also the sports director, his compatriot Kim Andersen . The captains of the team were the two Luxembourg brothers Andy and Fränk Schleck ; In addition, the then time trial world champion and classic specialist , the Swiss Fabian Cancellara , could be won. In addition to these three drivers, there were four more drivers from the Riis Saxo-Bank team, including the Australian Stuart O'Grady and the German Jens Voigt . Other important commitments are the two German drivers Linus Gerdemann and Fabian Wegmann , who moved to Luxembourg from the lost Team Milram . The Luxembourgish Continental Team Differdange-Magic-SportFood.de was to serve as the junior team .

Merger and renaming

The team was merged with the US team RadioShack for the 2012 season and started under the name RadioShack-Nissan in 2012 , while the Leopard-Trek Continental Team , which was designated as the junior team, was called the Leopard-Trek Continental Team , essentially taking over the name of the ProTeam. The team structures remained in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . The team also retained its Luxembourg nationality. Most of the previous drivers stayed with the team, including top drivers Andy and Fränk Schleck, as well as Fabian Cancellara. The new General Manager was the Belgian Johan Bruyneel , who previously held this position at Team RadioShack.

The operator of the former American team RadioShack , Capital Sports and Entertainment , withdrew from the organization of the ProTeam and the sponsors support the Luxembourg team, which is still managed by Leopard SA , but takes on the name of the new sponsors. RadioShack team manager Johan Bruyneel remained in office and Lance Armstrong was also involved in the new team with Livestrong ; the marketing department remained in Austin , Texas . Two Continental teams were to serve as the farm team : the newly founded Luxembourgish Leopard-Trek Continental Team and the American Bontrager Livestrong Team .

In the course of the investigation by the USADA against Lance Armstrong for alleged systematic doping in US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team also serious allegations against Johan Bruyneel were raised, who was then leader of this team. At the end of October 2012, the team operator therefore decided to part with Bruyneel and instead to entrust the Italian Luca Guercilena , who had previously been the team’s sporting director, with the role of general manager.

At the end of the 2012 season, Nissan , the second name sponsor of the merged team, announced that it would no longer support the team.

Takeover by Trek

After the name sponsor RadioShack announced in the course of 2013 that it would stop funding the team at the end of the year, Flavio Becca sold the team and the license to the bike outfitter Trek Bicycle Corporation , which registered the team with the UCI in 2014 with an American license. At the beginning of the 2016 season, the Italian coffee products company Segafredo Zanetti became the team's second name sponsor for a period of three years.
