Israel Start-Up Nation is an Israeli cycling team based in Tel Aviv .

history

The team was founded in 2015 as the Cycling Academy Team and initially took part in the UCI Continental Circuits as the UCI Continental Team . The team raced with a license as a UCI Professional Continental Team between 2016 and 2019 and received a license as a UCI WorldTeam from the 2020 season .

The manager was initially the former racing cyclist Ran Margaliot . The team was founded in 2014 after a meeting of the future manager and the cycling enthusiast entrepreneur Ron Baron with the aim of promoting cycling in Israel. In 2016, real estate billionaire Sylvan Adams joined the project, whose Romanian father, after surviving a Nazi labor camp, emigrated to Canada via Turkey and Palestine, where the family grew rich. His son Sylvan moved to Israel in 2016. He supported the start of the Giro d'Italia 2018 with three stages in Israel with considerable financial resources. The team took part in a Grand Tour for the first time with this race .

The sporting directors were initially Dror Pekatch and Ján Valach , who were replaced by former Tour de France stage winner Nicki Sørensen for the 2016 season .

In 2017, the team signed the Turkish time trial champion Ahmet Örken . As a result, his family in Turkey was under such pressure for political reasons that Örken asked to terminate his contract.

At the beginning of October 2019 it was announced that the owners of the Israel Cycling Academy would take over the operating company of the Katusha Alpecin Katusha Management team and thus the WorldTour license and the existing contracts of this team. The Israel Cycling Academy's team manager, Kjell Carlström , will take on this position at Katusha Management . In December 2019, the team was registered as the UCI WorldTeam for the 2020–2022 seasons. In this context, it became known that the name will be changed to Israel Start-Up Nation because of the new name sponsor Start-Up Nation Central , an Israeli nonprofit organization that supports Israeli start-up companies . In 2020 the team entered into a cooperation in the areas of marketing and product development with the Formula 1 racing team Williams F1 . In addition to the WorldTeam, a development team has existed under the name Israel Cycling Academy since 2020 .
