Matthias Brändle (born December 7, 1989 in Hohenems ) is an Austrian cyclist . On October 30, 2014, he set a new world hour record .

Athletic career

Brändle started cycling at the age of twelve at the RV Hohenems mountain bike club and drove his first road bike races for the Pro Cycle Team Bregenz . In 2004 he became Austrian national champion both on the mountain and in the individual time trial . As a junior he was twice national champion in the individual time trial and under national coach Jure Pavlic he was the first Austrian to win the Trofeo Karlsberg and in the same year the Upper Austria Tour.

In 2008 Matthias Brändle switched to the farm team of what was then ProTeam Gerolsteiner , the Continental Team Team Ista . He achieved excellent results here. The next year he received his first contract with a Professional Continental Team at Elk Haus and a ProTeam contract with Footon-Servetto in 2010 . For this team he competed in the 2011 Vuelta a España as an assistant to the overall winner Juan José Cobo . Brändle won three Austrian state championship titles in the individual time trial in the adult division, once in the U23 and twice in the elite. He twice won the points classification of the Tour de Romandie .

On October 30, 2014, the then 24-year-old set a new hour record of 51.852 kilometers in Aigle , Switzerland , on the cycle track in the World Cycling Center of the Union Cycliste Internationale . He improved the only one and a half month old record of the German Jens Voigt by 737 meters. On February 8, 2015, Brändle's record was surpassed by the Australian Rohan Dennis .

In the time trial of the national championships in June 2018 in Stephanshart, as in the previous year, he again finished second behind Georg Preidler . At the UCI Road World Championships 2018 in Innsbruck , he finished 26th in the individual time trial as the best Austrian in September. Matthias Brändle has been coached by Mathias Nothegger since autumn 2018 and he announced a move to the Israel Cycling Academy cycling team in 2019 , where he has signed a two-year contract.

On August 22nd, 2020 he was able to repeat his success of the previous year and became Austrian national champion in the individual time trial for the sixth time.

Awards

  • In January 2015, Brändle was voted "Cyclist of the Year 2014" by the Austrian Cycling Association .
  • In October 2018 he was honored at the sports gala in his hometown Hohenems.
