Career
Cycling until 2003
Hannes Hempel is three-time Austrian national champion (1993, 1999) and won two stages in the Tour of Austria (1994, 2002). He was the mountain king of many international tours and was named one of the best mountain drivers in the world in 2000. He only narrowly lost the Tour of Austria in 2000 against Georg Totschnig . From 2001 he was under contract with the German team Gerolsteiner but his career failed because of his fear of flying.
Athletics and triathlon since 2006
In 2003 Hempel ended his career as a cyclist and moved to the Carinthian provincial government, but stayed on cycling as a co-commentator at ORF .
Hannes Hempel developed into an excellent runner and took 19th place at the Austrian Half Marathon State Championships in 2006 with a time of 1:13:59 hours.
As a triathlete, Hannes Hempel took eighth place over the long distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling, 42.195 km running) at the Ironman Austria 2007 and was third the following year. He started with a professional license in the Austrian Triathlon Association and for the HSV Triathlon Carinthia club .
2009 doping affair
In the ongoing doping process against Bernhard Kohl , the latter stated that Hannes Hempel had received the Epo drug CERA . Further gave Lisa Hütthaler in court, Hannes Hempel would have advised her to bribe a laboratory worker in Seibersdorf. The criminal proceedings against Hempel were discontinued by the public prosecutor's office in Wiener Neustadt, and on July 29, 2009 NADA announced that doping proceedings had been initiated against Hannes Hempel. On June 15, 2010, Hannes Hempel was banned from NADA for four years with retroactive effect from May 2008. Hempel announced that he would appeal against the lock. The suspension was shortened by four months by NADA on January 10, 2012 after Hempel had cooperated with the authorities.
On April 25, 2013 it was announced that Hannes Hempel had tested positive for testosterone during a training check on March 8. As a result, he decided not to open the B sample and declared his resignation from professional sport. He was then banned for life in October.
