The criminal proceedings against Hempel were discontinued by the public prosecutor's office in Wiener Neustadt, and on July 29, 2009 NADA announced that doping proceedings had been initiated against Hannes Hempel. On June 15, 2010, Hannes Hempel was banned from NADA for four years with retroactive effect from May 2008. Hempel announced that he would appeal against the lock. The suspension was shortened by four months by NADA on January 10, 2012 after Hempel had cooperated with the authorities.

On April 25, 2013 it was announced that Hannes Hempel had tested positive for testosterone during a training check on March 8. As a result, he decided not to open the B sample and declared his resignation from professional sport. He was then banned for life in October.
