Max Bulla (born September 26, 1905 in Vienna ; † March 1, 1990 in Pitten , Lower Austria ) was one of the most successful Austrian cyclists of his time and the first Austrian to win the yellow jersey in the Tour de France .
Athletic career
Max Bulla celebrated his first successes by winning the Austrian road championships in 1926 and 1927. He achieved international success in the early 1930s. In 1931, Max Bulla was able to win several professional cycling races, such as the championship in Zurich , achieved three stage victories in the Tour de France as an independent and won the classification in this class. He was the first Austrian to wear the yellow jersey for one stage. Tour organizer Henri Desgrange was so impressed by Bulla's performance that he made sure that he could start in the German national team the following year.
In 1931 Bulla also won a stage in the Deutschland Tour . In 1933, with two stage wins, he won the overall standings of the Tour de Suisse, which was held for the first time, with a lead of 9:01 minutes over the Swiss Albert Büchi . Further stage victories in the Tour de Suisse followed in 1934 and 1936. Max Bulla also won two stages in the Vuelta a España in 1935.
Since Bulla started mainly outside of Austria, he was not very popular in his home country. That changed during the war years, when Bulla - from 1940 a member of the NSDAP - fought popular duels with his compatriot Ferry Dusika due to a lack of races abroad or competed in national competitions against Italy and Denmark. After 1945 the two athletes wrote a book together.
Bulla ended his sporting career in 1949 at the age of 44, after having finished sixth on the long-distance journey Vienna – Graz – Vienna over 427 kilometers behind Derny - Pacer . He then worked in the car trade, importing vehicles from Morris and Volvo to Austria.
Max Bulla is buried in Hinterbrühl . In 1993 the Bullagasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
