The International Opel Germany Tour , a predecessor of today's Germany Tour , was held from May 4 to 24, 1931 . It led from Rüsselsheim over 3,971.8 kilometers back to Rüsselsheim, the headquarters of the host Opel . There were five rest days in 16 stages.
36 drivers from six national teams started. They came from Germany , Belgium , Italy , France , Switzerland and a mixed team from Luxembourg , the Netherlands and Austria . 25 starters reached the finish line, with the winner covering the distance with an hourly average of 29.230 km / h.
For the first time since the introduction of the tour, it had an international effect. With the two-time Luxembourg Tour de France winner Nicolas Frantz , sponsor Opel, under the direction of organizer Herrmann Schwartz, had signed a real top-class. After the seventh stage, there was already some dissatisfaction in the press, after there had been only one German stage winner until then. In the second part of the tour, the German drivers then showed their skills. With Erich Metze and Oskar Thierbach , two Germans were at the top of the podium in the end. In addition, the German team confidently secured the team classification, which was introduced for the first time, ahead of the French team.
