The international Afri-Cola Germany Tour , a predecessor of the later Germany Tour , took place from April 12 to 18, 1962 . The bike race led back 1,736 kilometers from Cologne to Cologne. It was held in seven stages. There was also a 64.8-kilometer prologue in Cologne on the day before the start , but this was not included in the overall ranking.

There were 56 drivers in ten international company teams and one mixed team. 34 starters reached the finish line, with the winner covering the distance with an hourly average of 35.803 km / h.

For the first time in the history of the Tour of Germany, television viewers were able to see pictures from the helicopter. However, this innovation did not help to attract new donors for a tour in Germany, which is why further events were to fail until 1979.

The tour was not very selective this year. Due to the undemanding stage profiles, the first three drivers reached the finish in Cologne in the same time. The drivers in positions 6 to 12 also finished with the same time. In the end, the Dutchman Peter Post won ahead of Lode Troonbeeckx and Roger Baens from Belgium.
