The 2nd tour of Germany took place from May 26th to June 1st, 2000 . It led from Bonn over 1,247 kilometers to Berlin , i.e. in reverse order to the previous year, with the route being more southerly. 144 drivers from 18 professional teams started, 117 of them reached the finish.
course
On the first stage, last year's winner Jens Heppner immediately secured the white jersey of the overall leader after he had prevailed in the sprint of a leading group. On the following four stages, only Davide Casarotto was able to break through the dominance of Team Telekom with a successful escape attempt on the fourth stage . Udo Bölts on the third stage and Erik Zabel on stages 2 and 5 underlined the supremacy. Only in the finish sprint of the sixth stage did Zabel have to admit defeat to his German competitor Marcel Wüst for the first time in the mass sprint . In the decisive individual time trial , David Plaza from the Festina team surprisingly secured victory. He was 40 seconds faster than Andreas Klöden , who everyone believed to be the overall winner. With his victory, Plaza secured the white jersey from Heppner and did not give it up on the final stage to Berlin, which Zabel won again.
Jan Ullrich received strong criticism during the tour because a month before the Tour de France he lost over 15 minutes to the winner Udo Bölts on the royal stage over the Kandel and showed an overall mixed performance.
