The International Vitamalz Tour , a predecessor of the later Germany Tour , took place from August 6th to 11th, 1979 . It led from Munich over 1,080 kilometers to Dortmund . In a prologue , which was an individual time trial , there were six more stages.

There were 91 riders in twelve international cycling teams and a mixed team at the start. 77 starters reached the finish line, with the winner wearing a yellow jersey covering the distance with an hourly average of 39.112 km / h.

After Dietrich Thurau's success at the Tour de France in 1977 , a tour of the Federal Republic of Germany took place for the first time since 1962 . The race was held two weeks before the 1979 World Road Championships. The title sponsor was the beverage manufacturer Vitamalz . The race was also a great success with the public. According to the organizers, almost three million people stood on the routes of the stages.

After the prologue, Thurau received the yellow jersey of the leader in the overall classification and did not give it up until the finish in Dortmund. The Italian Francesco Moser secured the mountain prize , while Horst Schütz won the points classification .
