Daniel "Danny" Clark (born August 30, 1951 in Launceston , Tasmania ) is a former Australian track cyclist and four-time world champion.

Athletic career

Danny Clark had his first international success at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , when he won the silver medal in the 1000 m time trial on the track. After becoming Australian champion three times, he moved to the pros .

In the same year Clark won his first six-day race with Fred Atkins in Sydney . Then he moved to Europe, because there his professional prospects as a professional cyclist were much better. He lived in Belgium for many years .

With his compatriot Donald Allan he celebrated his first six-day victory in Europe at the Sixdays in Gent in the 1976/77 season ; together they achieved 15 successes in six-day races. With the British Tony Doyle he won another 19 six-day races. Clark started a total of 235 six-day races in his 23-year professional career and achieved 74 victories; so he is in the "eternal list" of six-day winners in second place behind Patrick Sercu . His other partners included drivers such as Francesco Moser , René Pijnen , Urs Freuler and Dietrich Thurau . He won his last six-day race in November 1995 at the age of 44 in Dortmund (with Rolf Aldag ), making him the oldest racing driver to date to have succeeded ( as of 2019 ).

In addition to his successes in six-day races, the versatile Clark was seven times European champion in the Omnium and three times Derny and Madison European champion. In 1980 he also became the first world champion in the Keirin discipline and was able to repeat this success in 1981 ; In 1988 and 1991 he won the world championship title for stayers .

At the six-day races, Clark was not only in demand as a racing driver, but also as an entertainer: he often performed with vocal interludes during the breaks, to which he accompanied himself musically with the guitar.

In 1989, Clark, who now lives in Australia again, was the Australian champion on the high-bike over a mile . In 2014 he shot the 50th six-day race in Bremen , won the All-Star Race at the age of 62 and performed as a musician every evening.

In December 2014, the now 63-year-old Danny Clark started in the Australian championship in two-man team driving. Together with his 21-year-old partner George Tansley , he finished 13th out of 18 teams.

Individual evidence

  1. These are unofficial European championship titles, as these competitions were invitation races that were held by the six-day organizers. That is why Clark was able to participate as an Australian.
