Six day race in Cologne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cologne six-day race was held 46 times between 1928 and 1998.

Six-day race in the Rheinlandhalle

On October 10, 1928, the starting shot for the first Cologne six-day race was given in the Rhineland Hall in Cologne-Ehrenfeld . The 166.66 meter long wooden cycling track was planned by the Münster architect Clemens Schürmann . The Cologne local heroes Gottfried Hürtgen and Viktor Rausch won , and Willi Ostermann wrote: "That was a spurt, that was a feeling, long live intoxication, long live Hürtgen!" The "black hussars" Rausch / Hürtgen were able to take part in the 1930 event win the Cologne six-day race a second time. The last race before World War II took place in 1933. The Nazi sports leadership had changed the rules for six-day races so that they were no longer financially lucrative; there was also a possible ban in the room.

Cologne sports hall

After the war, the six-day races took place from 1958 in the Cologne sports hall on the grounds of the KölnMesse . They were organized by the Kölner Sportstätten GmbH , which belongs to the city. The wooden track there was expandable, 166.66 meters long and had a curve superelevation of 54 degrees. It was designed by Herbert Schürmann , son of Clemens Schürmann. Six-day races were held on this track until 1998. The sports hall was demolished in 1999, and the Lanxess Arena, which was intended to replace this venue, was not intended to be a cycling track.

The most successful driver in Cologne was Albert Fritz with seven wins.

New plans

In November 2010 it became known that the journalist Christian Stoll is planning a new edition of the Cologne six-day race for November 2012 together with the Dutch organizer Frank Boelé . The race is to take place on a mobile track in a hall of the fair. Erik Zabel was introduced as the sports director . In February 2012 the race was canceled by Stoll due to a serious illness and announced for 2013. It was then planned for November 7, 2013 to November 12, 2013, but was canceled again.
