The piece, published on November 9, 1984, was an international success. While it made it into the top ten in numerous European countries, the single reached number 12 in the US , making it the only top 20 hit that Ashford & Simpson had in the United States. In New Zealand the song reached number 1 on the charts.

The piece is 3:46 minutes long and was also released on Capitol Records on the album of the same name. The album reached the top 50 on the LP chart in the UK. The single reached number 3 in the UK. On the B side of the single is an instrumental version of the song.

The song is about a couple who, no matter what problems arise, still love and forgive each other. This is what the refrain “Solid as a Rock” describes.

Music video

At the beginning of the music video, Valerie Simpson gets out of a taxi. During a walk it starts to rain and she takes refuge in a tunnel covered with a newspaper. After she has sat down on a bench, Nickolas Ashford joins them. Then several people join them to all sing together.
