Since 1971 no single has been at number 1 without a break.

biography

1957–1980: origin and education

Reim grew up in the district town of Homberg (Efze) . His father was the director of the grammar school in Homberg. After graduating from high school , Reim began studying German and English at the University of Göttingen , which he neglected in favor of music and did not graduate.

1980–1990: early years

He played in the bands Airway from Bad Wildungen and Aqua from Kassel , among others . First own recordings with the bands Fallen Dice and Fair Fax did not bring any commercial success. In 1984 he released his first solo single Von ferne Sternen on the Hansa label . In the second half of the 1980s he worked as a pop composer for Bernhard Brink , Jürgen Drews , Roy Black and Tina York .

1990–2000: Breakthrough with Damn, I Love You - the Polydor years

In 1990 came musical success. Reim sent a cassette with the title Damn, I love you to the ZDF presenter Wim Thoelke , who then invited Reim to his show and thus helped him achieve a breakthrough. The first album Reim was released in June 1990. By 1999, nine more albums were released by Polydor . Reim's third album Zauberland was also released in 1995 as an English version in Canada under the name Wonderland . The commercial success of his publications steadily decreased in the course of the 1990s. His first two albums, Reim (1990) and Reim 2 (1991), still reached the top 10 of the German album charts, while other albums missed a position entirely, so Alles Klar (1995), or did not get past 50th, so Sensationell (1998, Rank 51).

2000–2015: Debt and comeback at Electrola and Capitol

Reim could not repeat the success, but according to its own information, finally had liabilities of 13 million euros. Reim accused his former manager Alfred Reimann of having driven him into a financial crisis through mismanagement. Reimann, to whom Reim had given general power of attorney for his business in 1990, speculated about the purchase of real estate and companies. In the summer of 2007 he parodied his single Damn I Love You in a Sixt commercial. In it he sings, alluding to his debts, Damn, I have nothing, I rent from Sixt .

After a shortened bankruptcy process , Reim has been debt-free again since April 2010.

Commercially he made a comeback by switching from Polydor to the record company EMI and their labels Electrola and Capitol Records . In 2000, Wolkenreiter was the first album of this work phase. Since 2003 ( Reim (2003) ) he has entered the top 10 of the German album charts with each of his studio albums. In 2013 Reim released the album Infinite . After his debut in 1990, he reached number 1 in the German album charts for the first time.

2015 should be Reims' anniversary year - 25 years after his success with Damn I Love You . A collector's box was also produced for this purpose, which was also controversially discussed and was satirically treated by Jan Böhmermann, among others . Due to illness, however, many concerts as well as an album release and DVD recording had to be canceled and postponed until 2016.

From 2016: Further music career with RCA Records

For his album Phoenix , released in April 2016 , Matthias Reim switched from Capitol Records to RCA Records . Since then, the two studio albums Meteor (March 2018) and MR20 (October 2019) have been released.

Other artistic activities

In May 2019, Reim worked as an actor in the movie Shadows over Lake Constance .

The musician Michelle was Reims' partner from the late 1990s to 2001, with whom he gave birth to daughter and pop singer Marie Reim . From April 2012 he lived on the Mettnau peninsula , which belongs to Radolfzell . In August 2013, Reim and his wife Sarah separated after nine years of marriage.
