life and career

Markwardt grew up in Füssen and, after graduating from high school in 1993 at the Hohenschwangau grammar school , studied theater studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . She worked for around ten years as a freelance editor for Bayerischer Rundfunk and various film production companies in the fields of culture and nature.

From 2004 to 2019 Markwardt hosted the show Karen in Action. This was initially a five-minute part of the children's program Mörmel TV - Wissen mit Pfiff, but became an independent program from 2004 - directed by Christian Baur and Tim Gorbauch. In this program, she reports on different areas of life - such as largely unknown sports, science or unusual hobbies - and prepares them in an entertaining way for children and young people by reporting on everything on site and trying it out for herself (so-called edutainment ). She focuses on action-oriented and boys-affine topics, also to encourage girls to rethink old role stereotypes. These almost half-hour episodes - 80 of which were created - are still broadcast today on Bayerischer Rundfunk, ARD and KiKA . The show was developed and produced by MET Film- und Fernsehproduktion in Munich. Afterwards, 47 episodes were produced as short reports by Karen in Action .

This was followed by other productions for the children's program such as Aktion Schulstreich, Die Beste Klasse Deutschlands and Klasse Segelabventure. Karen Markwardt has been part of the team of moderators for the SWR Friday evening program Expedition to Homeland since 2011 .

In 2015 she was in Eric Horde's trash film Goblin - This is a real troll in front of the camera. In 2018 she worked again with Hordes and stood in front of the camera alongside Neil Malik Abdullah and Katy Karrenbauer for the dramedy series Patchwork Gangsta produced by the SWR for the media offering funk .
