School profile

The Hohenschwangau grammar school is a state grammar school with boarding school and leads to the Abitur. It offers a scientific-technological and a linguistic branch. In the 8th grade, the Intermediate Plus is offered.

Foreign language sequence

You start in 5th grade with English as your first foreign language. From the 6th grade you can choose between Latin and French as a second foreign language. Students who have chosen French as their second foreign language are committed to the science and technology branch. Students with Latin as a second foreign language can enter the linguistic or scientific-technological branch from year 8 onwards. The decision is only to be made towards the end of the 7th grade. At the end of the 9th grade, the second foreign language in all branches can be replaced by the late foreign language Italian. This foreign language, which begins late, must then be continued in the 11th and 12th grades alongside one of the other foreign languages (E, L, F).

Training branches (8th to 10th grades)

In the linguistic branch, French is taught as a third foreign language for four hours per week from year 8 onwards. Chemistry classes do not begin until the 9th grade. In the scientific-technological branch, chemistry lessons begin in the 8th grade with three hours per week, in the 9th grade the computer science lessons are added with two hours per week. A third foreign language is not introduced.

Intermediate Plus

The Hohenschwangau grammar school was selected as one of 47 grammar schools across Bavaria to try out the middle level plus in practice as part of the two-year pilot phase from the 2015/16 school year. The Intermediate Level Plus offers one year of additional learning time, in which the students receive special support in the core subjects. Individual subjects will be moved from grades 8, 9 and 10 to grade 9+. There is a reduction in the number of subjects and the number of hours per year. As a result, there are no compulsory afternoon classes in grades 8, 9 and 9+.

For the 2015/2016 school year, around 45% of the students in Hohenschwangau opted for the Intermediate Plus. As a result, in the 8th grade 2015/2016, two regular classes and two classes in the plus train were formed. In the 2016/17 school year, three plus classes and one regular class were formed.
