history

In 1912, Martin Sixt founded Martin Sixt Autofahrten with a fleet of three automobiles, which he said was Bavaria's first car rental company. The target group for luxury vehicle rental with a Deutz Landaulet de Luxe and two Daimler vehicles were wealthy foreign customers. In February 1919, Martin Sixt bought a building at Seitzstraße 11 in Munich , which still houses a Sixt branch today. Martin Sixt rebuilt the company after the First World War and passed it on to his nephew Hans Sixt in 1927. Development after the Second World War

In 1948 the company opened a taxi business in Munich with the first radio taxis in Europe. Auto Sixt was founded in 1951 . In April 1966 the first branches opened at Frankfurt am Main and Munich-Riem airports . From 1967, Sixt became the first German company to offer leasing vehicles. In 1969 Erich Sixt took over the management of the company with 200 vehicles. In the same year he also added trucks to the range. In 1976 Regine Sixt joined the company and signed contracts with all major airlines and hotel chains. The following year the company set up branches at all major German airports. From 1977, Sixt was also a licensee of the American car rental company Budget . In 1982 Auto Sixt changed its name to Sixt Autovermietung GmbH . In 1986 the company was converted into a German stock corporation under the name Sixt AG and traded on the stock exchange. In 1988 Sixt Leasing GmbH was founded as a subsidiary . In 1989, the company opened a subsidiary outside of Germany for the first time in Switzerland . Sales rose from 19 million D-Marks in 1981 to 149 million D-Marks in 1988.

International expansion since 1990

From 1991 the expansion with franchisees began increasingly internationally. In 1993 the company outsourced the operative business of the AG to another subsidiary, Sixt GmbH & Co Autovermietung KG . The Sixt AG then acted as a holding company of the Group . In 1993 Sixt took over the competitor Autoverleih Buchbinder , continued to integrate the brand for a while and eventually discontinued it. Sixt did not secure the naming rights to Buchbinder. Buchbinder was then re-established and re-established on the market. Buchbinder has been part of Europcar since 2017 . In the 1990s, Sixt rose to become the largest German car rental company. In 1997 it opened 150 branches in France and further branches at airports in Great Britain . In 1998, countries outside of Europe followed, including Tunisia , Morocco and New Zealand . With around 1500 employees and over 1000 branches in Europe, the company achieved a turnover of around 4.6 billion D-Marks in 1998. Due to the international expansion and a subsequent legal dispute, Sixt and Budget ended their cooperation in 1999. Also in 1999, Sixt and the American provider Dollar Rent A Car entered into a cooperation. In 2000 Sixt focused all its internet activities in the newly founded subsidiary e-Sixt , which among other things offered an internet platform for renting, buying and leasing vehicles.

In the years 2001 to 2003 Sixt expanded into the Middle East and various countries in Africa . The company founded a low-budget service under the Sixti brand in 2003 , which later became part of DriveNow . In the same year, the stock corporation had to fight off an attack by hedge fund manager Florian Homm , who was speculating on a falling share price. The attack ended with a fine for price manipulation for Homm. Also in 2006 Sixt tried to take over competitor Europcar, whose owner Volkswagen offered it for sale. In addition to antitrust concerns (Sixt had a market share of around 23 percent at the time, Europcar 22 percent), there was also resistance from the Europcar works council , which feared staff cuts after the merger. Volkswagen finally decided on the offer from the French financial investor Eurazeo .

From 2007, Sixt founded various online platforms and services through its subsidiary sixt e-ventures . These included the car community Carmondo who share community Stock Flock (later MyStocks ), the speed camera warning system RadAlert , the wine storage service Winebase and autohaus24 . The Stockflock , Radalert and Winebase services were later discontinued. In 2009 Auto Bild bought 19.9 percent of the shares in Autohaus24 and Carmondo . In the course of this cooperation Autohaus24.de was expanded to include editorial content from Auto Bild and Carmondo was integrated into Autobild.de . In the same year Alexander Sixt took over the management of the company's corporate development.

Development since 2010

In 2010 Sixt offered electric cars for the first time. In 2011, the company opened its first US branch in Florida . On June 9, 2011, Sixt and BMW founded the car sharing provider DriveNow as a joint venture . In 2012 Auto Bild withdrew the option agreed in 2009 to increase its stake in Autohaus24 to 50 percent.

At the beginning of 2013, the company founded the chauffeur service myDriver . In August 2013 Sixt AG was converted into the legal form of a European company (Societas Europaea) and has been called Sixt SE since then . As part of the conversion, a European works council (“Sixt Europe Employee Forum”) was founded in 2013.

In May 2015, Sixt SE brought its subsidiary Sixt Leasing  SE to the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. After the IPO, Sixt SE owned 41.9% and the free float was 58.1%.

In 2015, the Supervisory Board extended Erich Sixt's management contract until 2020. At the same time, Alexander Sixt and Konstantin Sixt were appointed additional members of the Management Board. In 2016, the myDriver and DriveNow services will also be active outside of Germany. In May 2016 Sixt took over all of Auto Bild's shares in Autohaus24.de .

At the beginning of 2018, Sixt sold its 50 percent stake in DriveNow to BMW for 209 million euros. In September 2018, the company announced that it would invest around 100 million euros in expanding its mobility services. In February 2019, the company launched a new car sharing service under the SIXT share brand , which uses the Sixt branches across Germany as delivery stations in addition to certain business areas. At the same time, Sixt introduced a new app that combined car rental, car sharing and driving services in one application.

SIXT rent

The company has around 500 rental stations in Germany. There are around 2,200 car rental branches worldwide. Outside Europe and the USA, Sixt is represented by franchise and cooperation partners. The listed subsidiary Sixt Leasing SE offers private and commercial customers new vehicles for leasing with or without purchase option via the internet platforms sixt-neuwagen.de and autohaus24.de . Awards

The company is known for its advertising installations at airports. The prize for the best airport advertising 2013 went to Sixt.

In 2015, the Sixt family was awarded the German Media Prize 2015 as “Media Personality of the Year” by the trade magazine Werben & Sell .

In 2017 and 2018 Sixt took first place in the Top Service Germany competition in the B2C category . The prize is awarded by the business newspaper Handelsblatt together with the consulting firm ServiceRating and the University of Mannheim . In 2018, Sixt was also recognized for its services in various countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as the best car rental company at the World Travel Awards . Together with his advertising agency, Jung von Matt , Sixt received the Best-of-Show-Award in the Evergreen category of the GWA Effie Awards 2018.

Advertising campaigns

Sixt relied on striking advertising slogans in its early history. During the hyperinflation after World War I, Sixt advertised with the slogan "20 trillion marks per day - you can simply consider this Mercedes car as a gift". From the mid-1980s onwards, the advertising campaigns with the participation of Jean-Remy von Matt became part of the company's brand identity and became increasingly provocative. After Oskar Lafontaine resigned as Federal Minister of Finance and SPD chairman in 1999 , Sixt used portraits of the cabinet members under the Schröder government to advertise that of Lafontaine. The picture was accompanied by the slogan: “Sixt also leases cars to employees during their probationary period.” Oskar Lafontaine then sued the company, who believed that his personal rights had been violated. The group was sentenced in 2004 by the Hamburg Higher Regional Court to pay Lafontaine € 100,000 in damages. The judgment was overturned by the Federal Court of Justice in 2006 and the politician's complaint was dismissed.

In 2001 the company advertised a convertible with a motif from Angela Merkel . On the left she was seen with normal, drooping hair and on the right with a wild, upright hairstyle. This was accompanied by the slogans: "Do you want a new hairstyle?" "Rent a convertible". According to the trade magazine Horizont , the campaign is one of the "most talked about advertisements in Germany". The newspaper Die Welt described the campaign as the company's best known.

In 2007 Sixt was sharply criticized for a camouflaged advertising campaign entitled “Go to the Army”. The slogan “Experience what comradeship means, show the enemy your limits and drive an even cheaper convertible than at Sixt” was presented for the image of an open jeep with soldiers. The Bundeswehr should play with problems with young talent and deficiencies in equipment. In addition, a reference was made to a website gehzurarmee.de set up by the advertising agency Jung von Matt without any clear identification by Sixt as the author. Immediately after the advertising began, three Bundeswehr soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan. Also in 2007 Sixt focused on the strike of the train drivers' union GDL and thanked its chairman at the time: "Thank you, Manfred Schell!". According to the newspaper Die Welt, Sixt was “100 percent full” all around the rail strike at train stations. After Klaus Zumwinkel's tax evasion became known in 2008, advertisements for vans with the headline “For everyone who now has to get rid of files quickly” appeared.

On the occasion of the theft of Federal Health Minister Ulla Schmidt's company limousine during her vacation in Spain, an advertisement with a picture of the minister and the text “With the company car on vacation? There's Sixt in Alicante too! From € 29 per day including theft insurance ”. According to press reports, the Federal Ministry of Health did not comment on the ad.

In 2010 Sixt took up the size difference between Carla Bruni and her husband, the then French President, Nicolas Sarkozy : “Do it like Madame Bruni. Take a little French guy. In 2011, the company criticized the then federal government's euro policy and took up aid for Greece in its advertising: “Dear Greeks, Sixt is accepting drachmas again! In an interview with Der Spiegel, Erich Sixt later regretted the campaign and announced that he would no longer interfere to the same extent in “big politics”. After Gustl Mollath was released in 2013, Sixt used a portrait of Mollath for a campaign with the slogan “'If someone is crazy here, then the Sixt with its prices.' - Gustl Mollath - “. GDL boss Weselsky was named Employee of the Month by Sixt due to the rail strike in November 2014. In 2017, the company received criticism for an advertisement that was used in a similar form in 2001. A promotional video showed women dressed in bikinis on the beach and a voice commented “It's bad when young people can't afford to wear clothes because of an expensive rental car on vacation. In 2018, the former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen , and CDU politician Friedrich Merz were part of the Sixt advertising. Airport advertising

Sixt has received numerous awards for its advertising at airports. criticism

Conviction by the Federal Court of Justice

In 1999, the German Federal Supreme Court sentenced Sixt to compensation for inadmissible fixed prices for its franchisees .
