history

First years

Europcar was founded in Paris in 1949 by Raoul-Louis Mattei under the name "The Automobile Subscription". The brand name “Europcar” was created in 1951. After around 20 years of steady growth, the company was taken over by Renault , Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits and Accor in 1970 .

Volkswagen subsidiary

Since 1988, Volkswagen has gradually acquired shares in Europcar until the car rental company finally became a 100% subsidiary of the car manufacturer in 1999. In Germany, the Selbstfahrer Union (founded in Hamburg in 1927) had been part of VW since 1970. The two car rental companies merged in 1989.

Purchased by Eurazeo

In 2006 the investment firm Eurazeo bought Europcar from VW. The amount of the transaction was 2.4 times the annual turnover of Europcar in 2005. The chairman of the Eurazeo board, Patrick Sayer, commented on the acquisition with the words: “We are thrilled by the acquisition of Europcar. With an initial participation of 900 million euros, it is due to become one of the most significant investments for Eurazeo. " ("We are excited about the purchase of Europcar. With an initial investment of 900 million euros, it will be one of the most important investments for Eurazeo.")

In 2010, Europcar merged with Daimler AG to launch the car2go car sharing service in Hamburg. Europcar Germany

Europcar Germany is a subsidiary of the Europcar Mobility Group and was founded in 1927 as Motor-Verkehrs-Union in Hamburg. Already in 1928 the name was changed to Selbstfahrer Union GmbH. In the 1930s the company developed into Germany's largest car rental company and opened the first rental station at a train station in 1955 and four years later at an international airport - both in Hamburg. After the Volkswagen group became the owner in 1970, the name changed to interRent Autovermietung GmbH in 1974 and the merger with the French car rental company Europcar in 1989.

To this day, the headquarters of Europcar Autovermietung GmbH is in Hamburg. The car rental company operates 520 locations nationwide and moves a fleet of over 40,000 vehicles annually.
