The World Travel Awards ( WTA ) were founded in 1993 and are presented annually as an award by the London Mayfair- based media company World Travel Awards Ltd. awarded to recognize excellence in all key sectors of the travel , tourism and hospitality industries worldwide. Several thousand experts from the tourism industry from all continents, who work in agencies, hotels, airlines, tourism centers and other tourism institutions, take part in the nominations .

The votes and awards are then awarded by an international jury made up of tourism experts and specialist colleagues. Awards are presented both globally and across ten major international regions in a wide variety of categories including hotels and other accommodations, tourist attractions, airlines , travel agencies , cruise lines , safari companies, tour operators , festival and event destinations , game reserves , National parks , responsible tourism ( ecotourism ) and much more. The awards are often referred to as the " Oscars of the Travel Industry".
