Dollar Rent A Car was founded in Los Angeles , California in 1965 . In 1990 the automobile company Chrysler bought the company.
Car rental companies Dollar Rent A Car , Thrifty Rent A Car , Snappy Rent A Car and General Rent A Car worked together under the Chrysler umbrella . Chrysler closed General Rent A Car in 1993 and sold the company in 1994. The remaining Dollar and Thrifty were transferred to an independent subsidiary, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group , in 1997 . In Germany, a contract was signed with Dollar Rent A Car in 2004 with the licensee Terstappen .
