Lyft is an American service company. As a direct competitor of Uber , the transport operator has so far only appeared in North America, where it has a market share of 39% according to company information.

history

Lyft was founded in 2012 in San Francisco , California. A cooperation with General Motors has existed since 2016 .

In 2018, the company had sales of $ 2.2 billion but posted a loss of $ 911 million. When it went public in March 2019, the company was valued at $ 24 billion.

criticism

The driver service agent Lyft decided in August 2020 to suspend operations in the US state of California over the dispute over the status of drivers. The reason is a judge's decision that drivers active on such platforms in the state must be treated as employees rather than independent contractors under a 2019 law. However, Lyft prefers to stop operations rather than hire tens of thousands of drivers. The head of the bigger Lyft rival Uber , Dara Khosrowshahi, previously promised a similar approach.
