Fabián Hernando Puerta Zapata (born July 21, 1991 in Caldas , Antioquia ) is a Colombian track cyclist .
Athletic career
In 2010 Fabián Puerta won the Pan American championship in the team sprint in Aguascalientes , together with Christian Tamayo and Leonardo Narváez . In the following year and in 2012 he was the Pan-American champion in the Keirin , in the sprint he finished second in 2011 and third in 2012.
Puerta started in the Keirin at the 2012 Olympics in London , but retired in the first round. At the first run of the Track Cycling World Cup 2012/13 in Cali in October 2012, he won three medals: gold in Keirin and 1000-meter time trial as well as silver in the sprint. This made him the most successful athlete at this event.
In 2013, Fabián Puerta won gold medals in the Keirin and in the 1000-meter time trial at the Pan American Championships in Aguascalientes . In the time trial, he set a new Pan-American record of 1: 00.349 minutes. In 2014 he became vice world champion in the keirin.
During the 2015 UCI Track World Championships, Puerta, who had previously finished fifth in the time trial and seventh in the Keirin, collided with the Lithuanian ex-Keirin world champion Simona Krupeckaitė while warming up . Puerta suffered a traumatic brain injury, abrasions and facial injuries. The next day he was released from the hospital but missed the sprint tournament.
In 2016 Fabián Puerta was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished tenth in the sprint. In the Keirin he was fifth. In the same year he was three-time Pan American champion, in keirin, sprint and team sprint (with Rubén Murillo and Santiago Ramírez Morales ). At the 2017 UCI Track World Championships in Hong Kong , he won silver in the Keirin. The following year he became world champion in this discipline in Apeldoorn . In the same year he won gold twice at the South American Games in May / June and gold once at the Central American and Caribbean Games in August, as well as other medals.
doping
In June 2018, Fabián Puerta tested positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone during the Colombian track championships and was temporarily suspended on August 13 by the UCI , the world cycling association . After he had not received any information about the progress of the investigation by August 2019, he thought of giving up cycling for good.
Private
Puerta is married to the cyclist Juliana Gaviria . In 2017 the couple became parents of a son.
