Mohammed Azizulhasni Awang (born January 5, 1988 in Dungun , Malaysia ) is a Malaysian track cyclist .
Athletic career
Azizulhasni Awang was born the eighth of nine children. As a reward for a good grade in seventh grade, his father gave him a used bicycle. He started cycling as a member of the Dungun Cycling School . Originally Awang wanted Medicine study, but first decided to power cycling. He is 1.70 meters tall and delicately built; therefore he was nicknamed "The Pocket Rocketman" by his fellow sportsmen.
At the “Commonwealth Youth Championships” 2004 in Bendigo , Awang came third in the junior class in the 1000-meter time trial . In 2006, he won at the Asian Games to Sprint Junior. In 2008 he was two-time Asian champion in sprint and keirin .
After the overall victory in Keirin at the Track Cycling World Cup 2008/09 , Azizulhasni Awang started at the UCI Track World Championships in Pruszków in 2009 and was runner-up in the sprint world championship. This made him the first Malaysian rail driver to win a World Cup medal. In October 2009 he won the top-class three-day track sports event "Gran Caracol de Pista" in Medellín, Colombia . Awang was runner-up in Keirin at the 2010 World Track Championships in Ballerup . In the same year he won the bronze medal in the team sprint at the Commonwealth Games and the gold medal in the keirin at the 2010 Asian Games . In the 2010/2011 season he won the overall ranking in the Keirin of the Track Cycling World Cup .
2008 Azizulhasni Awang took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing in part. He carried the flag of the Malaysian team. In the Keirin he reached eighth place. Four years later he was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he won the bronze medal in Keirin, the first Olympic medal in cycling for Malaysia.
At the 2017 UCI Track World Championships in Hong Kong , Awang won his first world title in the Keirin after ten years in the national elite. This also makes him the first world champion from Malaysia in an Olympic discipline. In the following year he was the first Malaysian to win gold in the Asian Games in the sprint, in the team sprint he also won with Muhammad Sahrom and Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis and bronze in the keirin. In 2019 and 2020 he was Asian sprint champion. He won the sprint competition at the round of the World Cup in Cambridge and was ninth in the World Cup overall in this discipline after he had a bad fall while skiing in Brisbane and had to stay in hospital for several days.
Honors
In 2009, 2010, and 2017, Awang was named Malaysia's Sportsman of the Year . In 2018 he was named Malaysian Olympian of the Year .
On March 29, 2017, Awang laid the foundation stone for a new velodrome in his hometown of Dungun, which will be named Azizulhasni Awang Velodrome after him . The track is due to be completed in September 2021.
