Gordon Singleton

Geoffrey Gordon "Gord" Singleton CM (born August 9, 1956 in Niagara Falls ) is a former Canadian track cyclist and world champion.

Gordon Singleton began his cycling career as an amateur in 1975, the following year he was runner-up in the Canadian sprint and points race championships . He celebrated his first international successes at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978 , where he won a tandem race with Jocelyn Lovell and was third in the 1 km time trial . In 1978 he won the Pan American Games in the sprint and time trial. In the same year he was runner-up in the UCI World Sprint World Championships in Amsterdam . This placement in the sprint he achieved two more times in 1981 in Brno and 1982 in Leicester .

In 1982 in Leicester Gordon Singleton was also world champion in the Keirin . He was the first Canadian to win a world championship title in cycling. During the boycott of the Olympic Games in Moscow was held in London a "Grand Prix" in the course of Singleton two records over 200 and 500 meters set up. In 1983 he retired from active sports. From 1975 to 1980 he won ten national titles on the track in the sprint, 1000-time time trial, team pursuit and omnium disciplines .

In 1998 Singleton returned to the track and won the world title at the " UCI Masters " in Manchester , a competition for cyclists aged 35 and over.

Singleton now runs a car battery and tire company in his hometown of Niagara Falls. In 1987 he was awarded the Order of Canada .
