St. Cándida María de Jesús

Cándida María de Jesús (born Juana Josefa Cipitria y Barrio ) (born May 31, 1845 Berrospe near Andoáin , Gipuzkoa , Spain ; † August 9, 1912 in Salamanca , Spain) was a religious sister and founder of the Congregation of the Hijas de Jesus (Jesuitinas) ( Daughters of Jesus ). She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Juana Josefa Cipitria y Barriola was already enthusiastic about St. Ignatius of Loyola and his spirituality, especially his retreats , as a child . On December 8th, 1871, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception , she founded a congregation in Salamanca dedicated to religious education in the spirit of Ignatian asceticism and took the religious name Cándida María de Jesús . The work spread in Spain, in 1911 the first sisters were sent to Brazil . Today there are branches in Spain, Italy, China, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and other countries.

Pope John Paul II beatified Sr. Candida on May 12, 1996 , Pope Benedict XVI. Holy on October 17, 2010 . Her feast day in the liturgy is August 9th.
