Joachim "Joe" Eilers (born April 2, 1990 in Cologne ) is a German track cyclist .
Athletic career
Joachim Eilers began cycling in 1999 with the club “SG / EC Bayer Köln Worringen” (today SG Köln-Worringen ). Later he moved to the Solingen club "RC Schwalbe 03 Solingen". He has been a member of the Chemnitz Police Sports Club since 2004 and drove natural gas for the Chemnitz team until 2012 . He attended the local sports high school. Since 2006 Joachim Eilers has won several podium places in German junior and youth championships on the track.
In January 2010 Eilers took second place in the World Cup race in Beijing in the 1000 m time trial and in the same year took part in the World Track Cycling Championships in Ballerup . At the 2010 German Railway Championships in Cottbus , he was German runner-up in the team sprint together with Robert Förstemann and Carsten Bergemann . At the 2010 European Championships in Saint Petersburg , Joachim Eilers won the gold medal in the team sprint (U23) together with Tobias Wächter (Schwerin) and Philipp Thiele (Cottbus), was European champion in the Keirin and vice-European champion in the 1000-meter time trial behind Frenchman Quentin Lafargue .
At the UCI Track World Championships 2011 in Apeldoorn , Eilers finished fifth in his second year in the elite class in the 1000 m time trial; at the German championships in the same year he won the runner-up title in this discipline. In July he was European champion (U23) in team sprint at the European track championships in Anadia, Portugal , together with Erik Balzer and Stefan Bötticher , as well as vice-European champion in 1000 meter time trial and keirin . In December 2013 Eilers won the team sprint together with René Enders and Förstemann at the second run of the Track Cycling World Cup 2013/14 ; In the qualification the three athletes drove a new world record with 41.871 seconds . The trio improved the old record of 42,600 seconds set by the British team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
In 2014 , Eilers was runner-up in the time trial world championship as well as two-time European champions , in keirin and team sprint (with Robert Förstemann and Tobias Wächter). In the following year, he was able to repeat his success in the time trial as the UCI Track World Championships 2015 in the time trial and again became vice world champion in this discipline. At the European Championships in the same year he won silver in the time trial and, together with Förstemann and Max Niederlag, bronze in the team sprint.
In 2016 Eilers was nominated to participate in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In the team sprint he finished fifth together with Maximilian Levy and René Enders , in the Keirin he came fourth.
In 2017, Joachim Eilers won the team sprint together with Levy and Förstemann at the 2017/18 Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester and was two-time vice European champion in the 1000-meter time trial and in the team sprint (with Förstemann and Levy); In 2018 he had further successes at the Track World Cup and the European Track Championships .
Honors
On March 9, 2016, Joachim Eilers was honored together with Kristina Vogel and Max Niederlag with an entry in the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book . In 2015 and 2016 he was awarded the Chemmy as “Athlete of the Year” by Chemnitz.
